The Base Ball Writers Association of America (BBWAA), the old-boys club that gets to vote for all of baseball's awards, announced their Hall of Fame selections today. Well, selection - they only picked Goose Gossage.
I have no trouble with that - Goose deserves to be in. But the rest of the results are a joke.
Bert Blyleven, who should clearly be in, got 336 votes - you needed 408 to be elected. Tim Raines, who is only the second best leadoff hitter in the history of baseball, got 133.
And Alan Trammell got 99. Jack Morris got 233, but there's no way that Morris is more qualified than Trammell. Morris was a good pitcher that played for teams that scored a ton of runs, so he ended up with a great won-loss record. Trammell was a great player - one of the main reasons Morris got so much offensive support. Granted, he was a terrible manager, but he's not getting voted in for his managerial skills.
Mark McGwire got 128 - less than a third of what he needed. He's clearly a Hall of Famer when it comes to performance, but there are a ton of performance-enhancer questions about him. The Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens votes in a few years are going to be very interesting.
